Q.…  What is Corporate “Coaching for Life”?

Professional coaching is being successfully embraced by a number of corporations around the world as a way to support and retain their employees.
Coaching is often considered as a shift away from analytical, quantitative business skills towards more personal, interpersonal and organizational skills. In addition to the business and project management skills needed by a successful employee, today's employee requires support in building personal and communication skills, while clarifying ethical values in their work life.
A coach can help that employee sort out their career goals and also what they want to achieve not just in their job, but in their marriage, partnership or life. It's really about providing the person with the skills, tools and the knowledge so that they are better suited to deal with today's complex work world. This, in turn, leads to a more satisfied and well-rounded work force.

Margaret Krause, a former human resources manager with Hyatt Hotels International, believes coaching fills a need in the corporate world for human contact, professional advice and old-fashioned mentoring. “There are many companies that are being proactive in bringing in coaching and mentoring programs.” ¹

By supporting their leading performers, many organizations find the cost of coaching is insignificant compared with the cost of replacing burned-out employees, or the loss of productivity with employees who are not working up to their potential. Inside every successful businessperson is an even more ambitious one trying to get out. He or she just needs a little help.

According to a 1999 statistic, losing a professional mid-level employee costs a company $15,000 or more in recruitment, training and lost productivity.

    The Process...

Coaching provides the discipline, focus, structure and support to help employees thrive. In a definitive way, the objectives of coaching are:
  • to help individuals gain clarity about issues
  • to create an action plan toward their goals
  • to provide accountability to help them accomplish their goals.

    Initial Assessment...

The coaching process begins with a personal and professional assessment of where the individual is now and where they want to be. A number of tools are utilized to assist in clarifying issues, goals, and values. This intensive personal evaluation is where the decisions are made about what the individual wants, followed by the goal setting and planning.
Depending on the particular situation, this may also include an interview with the employee's supervisor, to get a clear assessment of his/her expectations and available support. The assessment interview includes education about the coaching process and tools used to keep the individual on task.

    Coaching Sessions...

Once the plan is made, ongoing coaching support is most effective when conducted in half-hour weekly sessions. These weekly sessions are frequently conducted by phone, although may be done in person and/or email. The benefit of these weekly sessions is that coaching explores what can be done to move closer to the goals, and provides the encouragement and accountability to do so, on a regular and consistent basis.

I conduct a highly structured coaching program in which clients fill out questionnaires before each session so that coaching is goal-driven rather than exploratory. Clients themselves identify their key objectives week to week. Depending on preference, some clients really want to be held to the task. They want to be held accountable each week around the exercise program, or perhaps the communications course that they've signed up for. Others are very self-motivated and driven and they use coaching more as a sounding board.

During the session, we renew the previous commitments, preview opportunities, examine obstacles, brainstorm options and choose the next course of action. These weekly sessions are designed to provide forward movement toward goals. Each coaching session has a specific format and focus. The following are the basic components:

  • a check-in regarding what is happening now or has happened in the past week.
  • the focus or specific issue to be explored during that session; for example, what challenges, concerns, achievements or areas of requested learning are to be explored.
  • what action was taken since the last session and to what result.
  • what agreements or declarations will be made for the next week to further the goals.

A minimum of four months of coaching, with occasional follow up sessions, is ideal for improved performance and behavior changes.

    Evaluation...

Upon completion of the four months, we evaluate the value for individual and the company, as well as the need for continued sessions.

    Benefits of Coaching

What happens when you hire a Coach?

Many things, but the most important are:

  • you take yourself more seriously.
  • you take more effective and focused actions - immediately.
  • you stop putting up with what is dragging you down.
  • you create momentum so it's easier to get results.
  • you set better goals that you might not have without a coach.

    These coaching sessions work because:

  • you set higher, more rewarding professional and personal goals
  • the coach holds you accountable
  • the coach asks more of you than others or you normally would ask
  • the coach works with you to trust your intuition, take action and improve your communication and interpersonal skills.

    WOMEN IN TRANSITION

Women face many transitions in a life where clarity about the issue and supportive action can help them gain greater satisfaction and move to the next higher level.
This may be at a time when a woman has devoted a number of years to raising her family and is ready to focus some of her attention on her own interests.
It may be related to handling life balance issues with family, career, personal relationships, as well as physical health and wellness.
Or maybe a woman decides she wants more out of her life, work and relationships.

This workshop addresses these and other issues by helping the participants rediscover their life's passion, clarify what they want next and develop an action plan to attain their goals.

HEALTHY OPTIONS FOR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS

Today's health care professional is in the paradoxical position of trying to promote better health, while working in toxic, stressful environments. They are being asked to do more and more with fewer resources. Many have forgotten why they came to health care because their inherent desire to care for others seems diminished in comparison to the other stresses.

This workshop provides the tools to clarify whether they want to stay in their current environment and create a healthy balance for themselves, or if they want to transfer their skills to another setting. From there they develop an action plan to carry out their desires.

    ALA CARTE WORKSHOPS
